How
to Acquire an Absentee Ballot
Those wishing to vote
early may apply to receive an early ballot by mail on or after the 60th
day before an election. Voters can obtain application forms for voting by
mail from the Office of the Secretary of State or from the county voting
clerk. It is not necessary to use the preprinted application form, but any
request for an early ballot by mail must:
- Be
in writing;
- Be
signed by the applicant (or by a witness if the applicant cannot
sign);
- Include
the applicant's name;
- Include
the applicant's address of permanent residence;
- Include
the address to which the ballot should be mailed;
- State
the reason for voting early ;
- Give
the type of election and the election date; and in a primary election,
indicate which party's ballot is being requested.

Early
Voting (in Person, not Voting by Mail)
Once registered to
vote in Texas, you can vote at your convenience beginning on the 17th day
before an election and ending on the 4th day before election day in most
elections. This is called early voting, and there are two types of early
voting in Texas. Vote early in person (you don’t need to vote in your
precinct, you can cast your ballot at any early voting site convenient to
YOU) or vote early by mail (this is done by requesting an application for
a ballot to be mailed to you or downloading an application form). Voting
early in person is convenient and, unlike early voting by mail, you
don’t need an excuse.
